What is Araldite and Its Uses

Adhesives are important substances that are used in countless applications, allowing for the surfaces of items to be bound together with ample resistance, all without the need for fasteners, drilled holes, or other more intrusive methods. While the adhesives that many may be familiar with are simplistic types that are used for more DIY projects, there are instances in which very powerful adhesives are needed. Araldite is one example of a more specialized adhesive, which may come in the form of a structural epoxy, acrylic, or polyurethane adhesive. Araldite finds use in numerous applications, assisting in the production of aircraft, buildings, body armor, and many more products. With Araldite’s powerful ability to benefit various manufacturing, construction, and scientific processes, it can be highly beneficial to familiarize yourself with it.

During the 1930s, the United Kingdom entity Aero Research Limited (ARL) began development for a type of synthetic-resin adhesive that could be utilized for the bonding of glass, metal, porcelain, and other related materials. Upon finalizing their product, they gave it the name Araldite to correlate with their branding. While production began in the early 1940s, it was not until 1946 in which Araldite DIY options were launched. With Ciba AG being the initial producer to be licensed for Araldite, they quickly grew and established themselves as one of the leading epoxy-resin manufacturers worldwide. Ciba eventually spun-off their epoxy business, later selling it in the late 1990s. As of the present, the epoxy business operates as Huntsman Advanced Materials, a United States corporation that now owns the Araldite trademark.

The reason for much of the popularity surrounding Araldite was a result of various publicity stunts and projects over the years where they showed the immense strength such adhesives could provide. In 1960, a car fuselage was bonded with Araldite, and it attempted to break the world’s land speed record at the time. A few years later, Araldite’s strength was shown off as a vehicle was bonded and lifted by a crane. With continuous advertisements and outreach, Araldite quickly became a recognizable brand as its applications spread to various industries.

While the first use of Araldite for aviation applications was for De Havilland Mosquito aircraft production in the 1940s, its use has greatly extended since. Now, Araldite products find use for Hawker Beechcraft Ltd models, Zodiac Aerospace models, and other various aircraft. Outside of aviation applications, other various projects and constructed buildings have benefited from the use of such adhesives, including the Sydney Opera House, the Ove Arup in the Coventry cathedral, the Lamborghini Aventador, and the Audi R8. For scientific applications, electron microscopy often takes advantage of Araldite resin as an embedding medium.

With the wide variety of uses presented by Araldite, multiple product types have been developed over the years. As such, one can take advantage of an Araldite polyurethane, Araldite glue, an Araldite hardener, or other various products depending on the application and need.
