About Cisco
In 1984, Sandy Lerner and her husband, Leonard Bosack, partnered together to found Cisco Systems while working at Stanford University. The company’s first project included linking Stanford’s computer systems with a router called the “Blue Box”, which had software written by William Yeager. Bosack and Kirk Lougheed, another Stanford employee, continued to work on a formal network across the university’s computer systems until 1986. Cisco then brought on a programmer by the name of Greg Satz and a sales member named Richard Troiano who altogether comprised the early team. Cisco then went public in 1990 before Sandy Lerner and Leonard Bosack left the company later that year. Cisco went on to successfully sell routers for multiple network protocols and continued developing steadily while acquiring other businesses in ethernet and similar technology industries.
Cisco quickly became a major market player from the late 1990’s into the early 2000’s as internet protocol became more widely used, and they were named the most valuable company in the world in 2000. In 2006, Cisco underwent a campaign to reestablish themselves as a household brand with consumer products while also continuing to develop their routing, switching, and security portfolio. Cisco also found much growth and success in the Indian market and other countries abroad, as well as faced heavier challenges from their competitors that resulted in more development. In recent years, Cisco has shifted away from their consumer electronics branding and has turned its focus onto cloud based systems and fog computing. Currently, Cisco is also seeing continued growth and success in overseas markets such as Brazil, China, India, and Russia.
