About Samsung
Samsung was first established in 1938 in Daegu, South Korea as a trading company under the leadership of the founder, Lee Byung-chul. The company began with dealing various food and groceries and was relocated to Seoul until 1947 due to the beginning of the Korean War. Through the end of the 1940’s and during the 1950’s, Lee also started a Busan sugar refinery, built the country’s largest woollen mill at the time, as well as diversified into various industries such as insurance and retail.
In the 1960’s, Samsung broke into the electronics industry, creating various market divisions and produced back-and-white television sets. In 1980, Samsung began creating switchboards and other telecommunications hardware as well after their acquisition of the company Hanguk Jeonja Tongsin. After the founder’s passing, the company was restructured, many of their divisions being separated and becoming independent. It was during this time in the 1980’s that Samsung also began expanding internationally, as well as invested great amounts in research and development.
Through the 1990’s, Samsung oversaw continued international growth, developing products such as mobile phones and televisions, and were the world’s largest memory chip producer. Samsung also entered the aerospace industry at this time, developing aircraft, engines, and gas turbines. Through the 2000’s leading up to the present, Samsung has continued their mobile phone development, remaining one of the world’s top manufacturers.
