About AMD
In 1969, Jerry Sanders and seven of his colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor came together to incorporate Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). That same year, AMD moved from their temporary location to Sunnyvale, California, and they soon became a second source supplier of microchips for National Semiconductor and Fairchild. This helped them establish a customer base, and their reputation furthered as they provided quality control for the United States Military Standard. In November of 1969, AMD manufactured their first product, which was a shift register. In 1971, AMD expanded their offerings to include RAM, and their linear integrated circuits also began to sell in great volume.
In 1972, AMD became a publicly traded company, and later expanded upon their product portfolio as a second source business. In 1975, AMD began to compete with Intel with their own line of microprocessors, and a year later they enacted a cross-licensing agreement together. Leading into the 1980’s, AMD continued to expand with increased sales and business partnerships, and it was around this time that AMD began to focus mostly on microprocessors. Leading into the present, AMD has focused on the production of microprocessors and other electronic components, acquiring businesses to widen their manufacturing capabilities.
