About Sikorsky
Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is an American manufacturer of aircraft and rotorcraft based in Stratford, Connecticut. Established in 1923 by Igor Sikorsky, it was one of the first companies to manufacture helicopters for both civilian and military use. Previously owned by United Technologies Corporation, Sikorsky is now a part of Lockheed Martin.
The company was founded in 1923 in Roosevelt Field, New York under the name Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation. In 1925, the company’s name was changed to Sikorsky Manufacturing Company. The company then moved to Stratford, Connecticut in 1929 when it became part of United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (now UTC). Sales declined during the 30s, and at the end of the decade, Sikorsky was merged with Vought Aircraft. At this point, the company began development of a practical helicopter. Soon after development of the Vought Sikorsky VS-300, the company began developing the Sikorsky R-4, the first stable, single-rotor, fully controllable helicopter. The R-4 entered full scale production in 1942 and would later be the design on which most future helicopters were based.
The company remains a leader among helicopter manufactures today, producing popular models such as the UH-60 Black Hawk, SH-60 Seahawk, and the VH-3 and VH-60 helicopters, used by the President of the United States.
