About Agusta
Agusta was an Italian manufacturer of helicopters based in Samarte, Northern Italy. The company was founded in 1923 by Giovanni Agusta, an avid pilot. The company began manufacturing helicopters in 1952, originally building Bell helicopters under license. Agusta would later build Sikorsky, Boeing, and McDonnell Douglas products as well, but also had ambitions of designing and building their own helicopters. In the 1970s, Agusta developed the A109, the company’s most successful aircraft. The A109 is a commercial and military twin-turbine helicopter, of which the latest variants are still in production.
In the 1980s, Agusta began several collaborative projects. In 1981, Agusta and Westland developed the EH101 medium-lift naval helicopter for the Navies of Italy and the UK. In 1985, Agusta worked with the aeronautic industries of France, Germany, and the Netherlands in order to develop and manufacture the NHIndustries NH90, a twin-engine multi-role medium helicopter intended to satisfy the requirements of their respective countries’ armed forces. In July of 2000 Agusta merged with Westland Helicopters and became AgustaWestland. The company still operates today as a subsidiary of Leonardo S.p.A.
